Helping Out

We are privileged to live and work in one of the most beautiful places on the planet, but life in rural Zambia is tough.  Education is expensive and facilities are limited.  The community is seriously affected by diseases such as malaria and AIDS.  Tourism to South Luangwa National Park creates many jobs for the local people but poaching threatens to curb its value.

It is with these factors in mind that Marula Lodge encourages our guests to support Project Luangwa (www.projectluangwa.org) and South Luangwa Conservation Society (www.slcs-zambia.org). Please look at the wonderful work that they are doing in the valley.

We work closely with Project Luangwa on a variety of projects.  If you are interested in contributing your time and skills please contact us or Project Luangwa so that we can match your skills to some of the needs of the community. We can help with the practicalities on the ground such as transport and accommodation. All that Project Luangwa asks is that you are self- funding. You will need to pay for your own tickets, accommodation and transport. If you choose to paint a classroom for example, you will pay for the materials. They will be happy to buy the necessary items and have them waiting for you on your arrival. We will also be happy to help source transport as required.

We are currently involved with increasing the English skills and literacy of the children in the area. If you would like to pack in some good quality children’s books when you visit they would be much appreciated, new or used! We will use these to provide children with valuable experience in English through fun literacy clubs.
We believe that getting to know the community through working with them will be a rewarding and unforgettable part of your African experience!

Volunteering

We encourage our guests to become involved in the community whilst in Mfuwe and we are happy to help you to put together a combination of safaris and volunteering in the community.
